Public consultation by the UN Secretary-General’s Expert Group on Net-Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Entities

Background:

The UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Expert Group on the NetZero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Entities today invited any interested individual or
group to contribute to its work by making written submissions through a new portal on the UN’s climate action website.

The Group’s Chair, Ms. Catherine McKenna, and several other Group members will also hold a global public webinar this week to launch the portal, provide an update on the Group’s work and expected timelines for making recommendations to the Secretary-General, and respond to questions.

Event: Global public session with the Expert Group on Net-Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Entities

Building on the Terms of Reference and the Workplan for the High-level Expert Group on the Net-Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Entities (HLEG), this global public consultation session will launch the portal for written inputs and address questions from global stakeholders about the HLEG’s work and the timeline for it to develop recommendations for the UN Secretary-General.

To avert a climate catastrophe, we need bold, credible net-zero pledges matched by concrete action. You are invited to share your ideas to the UN Secretary-General’s Expert Group on Net-Zero Emissions Commitments of Non-State Entities by making a written submission about how to hold businesses, investors, cities, and regions accountable for net-zero pledges and deliver immediate climate action.

The portal for written submissions will be open from 29 June to 31 August 2022. Inputs will be accepted around the four areas based on the Terms of Reference in any of the six official UN languages.

  1. 1.5 C degrees alignment: standards and definitions of net-zero;
  2. Short-term interim targets, transition plans, measurement, and reporting: credibility criteria;
  3. Governance of targets: verification and transparency;
  4. Pathway to regulation: standards and criteria in the context of a Just Transition.

By submitting inputs through the form, contributors give the United Nations permission to use and publish any part of their submission.
